Our story

The record, so far.

Two founders, one spare desk and a trust ledger that would not balance. This is how one firm’s fix became the system 2,400 firms run on.

2019

Built in a back office.

Maya and Ben set up at a spare desk in a Fitzroy conveyancing firm and started with the part everyone dreaded: the trust ledger.

2020

The first ledger balanced.

Three local firms ran their trust accounting on Filebird through a year of remote work. Every monthly reconciliation balanced to the cent.

2022

One thousand firms.

Word travelled between practice managers. Time capture and billing joined the ledger, and the thousandth firm moved in.

2024

Clients got a door.

The client portal launched, so clients could sign, pay and check on their matter without another phone call.

2026

2,400 firms and counting.

Today

Filebird now runs matters, time, billing and trust accounting for firms across Australia and New Zealand.

How we work

House rules.

Four rules we hold ourselves to. They decide what we build, what we leave out, and how we treat the information you trust us with.

Rule 1

Every 0.1 counts.

Lawyers bill in six-minute units, so Filebird counts in them too. Timers sit on every matter, and calls and emails become draft entries before anyone has to remember them.

Rule 2

Calm beats clever.

Law is stressful enough. Trust reconciliation is one button that checks against the bank every day, so month-end is just another week, not a weekend.

Rule 3

Your data is your client’s.

Privileged information stays privileged. It is encrypted, kept in Sydney and Melbourne, never sold, and every change lands in an audit log you can read.

Hourly backups, kept for 30 days

Rule 4

Lawyers first, software second.

Half of our 48 people have worked inside a firm, and they are the ones answering support. If a feature demos well but costs a practice manager an afternoon, it does not ship.
